Nasolabial Lines in Your 40s: 9-Month Follow-Up After Jubgen and Filler, Plus Additional Treatment

A patient in her 40s with nasolabial folds received Jubgen and a small amount of filler, was reviewed at 9 months, and had additional Jubgen for the lines that remained. Results vary by individual.

Nasolabial Lines in Your 40s: 9-Month Follow-Up After Jubgen and Filler, Plus Additional Treatment

Nasolabial folds should be evaluated not only for sagging but also for the structure around the mouth and the chin.

In an individual case involving a patient in her 40s, we followed up nine months after treatment with Jubgen and a small amount of filler.

Additional treatment was performed on the remaining lines, and results and progress vary from person to person.

Hello, this is Park So-hyun, Director of Samsung BNS Clinic.

Nasolabial folds don't appear only when the face sags or the cheeks are full. Even when the skin doesn't fold deeply, distinct lines can form around the mouth. In these cases, it is necessary to look at not only the condition of the skin but also how far the area around the mouth protrudes and the structure beside the nose and at the chin tip.

Today, using the case of a woman in her 40s who visited our clinic with concerns about nasolabial lines, I will explain the characteristics of the area where the lines formed, the treatment plan using Jubgen and filler, and the additional treatment process after nine months of follow-up.

01 What if the face isn't sagging much, but the nasolabial lines are deep?

This case involves a woman in her 40s who came in with concerns about nasolabial folds. When we first examined her face, the skin folding in the nasolabial area was not severe. Nor was there excessive facial fat or any pronounced sagging.

However, a closer look at the nasolabial area revealed long lines extending down toward the mouth. In particular, the two sides were not equally deep, and the line on the left was relatively deeper.

As this shows, distinct nasolabial lines can appear even when skin sagging is minimal. Rather than checking only how much the skin has drooped, it is important to examine where the line begins, how deep it is, and the surrounding facial structure together.

02 How Mouth Protrusion, a Sunken Noble Area, and a Receding Chin Affect Nasolabial Folds

Nasolabial lines may be related not only to skin condition but also to the structural features around the mouth. In particular, when the mouth is relatively protruded or the noble area beside the nose is recessed, the height difference with the surrounding areas can make the nasolabial folds look even more prominent.

This patient also had a slightly protruding mouth, and along with a sunken noble area, we observed the characteristics of a receding chin, where the chin tip sits relatively far back.

When the chin tip sits further back than the lips, the protrusion around the mouth can look more pronounced from the side. If the area beside the nose is also sunken, the curve of the nasolabial area can become even more noticeable.

Such facial structures can contribute to nasolabial lines appearing at a relatively young age. However, not all nasolabial folds develop for the same reason, so an individual's skin condition, bone structure, and soft tissue should be assessed comprehensively.

03 Why Jubgen for the Nasolabial Folds Was Combined With Filler for the Noble Area and Chin Tip

In this case, rather than looking at the nasolabial lines in isolation, we built the treatment plan by considering the surrounding facial structure as well.

First, we treated the nasolabial area with Jubgen. We then used a small amount of filler on the chin tip and the noble area to refine the contour.

Jubgen was applied to the lines in the nasolabial area, while filler was used with consideration for the relatively sunken noble area and the chin tip, which sits farther back.

This approach goes beyond simply treating the lines in the nasolabial area. It also takes into account the relative protrusion around the mouth and the balance of the facial contour.

Of course, not every patient with nasolabial folds receives the same treatment. The appropriate method and extent of treatment can vary depending on the shape and depth of the lines, skin condition, and facial structure.

04 Changes in the Nasolabial Lines at the 9-Month Follow-Up

About nine months after the initial treatment, the patient returned to the clinic. At that visit, the nasolabial area showed some lines that appeared lighter than before.

However, the change was not the same across the entire area. On the side that had been relatively deeper before treatment, some lines remained.

Since the depth of the lines differed between the two sides from the start, we examined each side separately during follow-up. Even if the lines on one side look less pronounced than before, fine lines may still remain on the other side.

The nine-month progress observed in this case reflects this patient's individual changes. The course after treatment and how long results last can differ depending on the condition of the lines and individual characteristics.

05 Additional Jubgen Treatment for the Remaining Lines

After reviewing the nine-month progress, we performed an additional Jubgen treatment on the nasolabial lines that remained.

The additional treatment focused on the lines that remained on the side that had been relatively deeper from the start.

In photos taken right after the additional treatment, the lines in that area appeared lighter than before. We checked the curvature and line condition of the nasolabial area not only from the front but also from a 45-degree angle.

However, the photos taken immediately after treatment simply show the condition right after the procedure. The nine-month follow-up photos and the photos taken right after the additional treatment were taken at different times and should be understood separately.

Also, the changes observed right after treatment do not mean they will remain the same over the long term. Subsequent progress may vary depending on each person's skin condition and other factors.

06 Examining the Side Profile Through Chin Tip Filler and the E-Line

In this case, along with the nasolabial area, we also administered a small amount of filler to the chin tip. This is because the position of the chin is related not only to the front view but also to the contour around the mouth as seen in profile.

One of the reference standards used to evaluate the side profile is the E-line. The E-line is an imaginary line connecting the tip of the nose and the chin tip, and it helps show how far the lips protrude relative to that line.

In general, the profile is assessed by whether the lips sit in front of the E-line or behind it.

This patient's mouth appeared relatively forward before treatment. After the chin tip filler, a difference appeared in the relative position of the lips against the line connecting the nose tip and the chin tip.

What matters here is that the E-line is not an absolute standard of beauty that applies to everyone.

Nose height, chin position, lip thickness, facial bone structure, and soft tissue all vary from person to person. For that reason, it is more important to evaluate the overall contour in light of each individual's facial structure than to adjust to a specific ratio or line.

07 Nasolabial Folds Require Checking Facial Structure, Not Just Line Depth

This patient in her 40s did not have significant skin sagging in the nasolabial area, but distinct lines extended toward the mouth.

Considering the relative protrusion of the mouth, the sunken noble area, and the position of the chin tip together, we performed Jubgen treatment on the nasolabial folds along with a small amount of filler. After confirming progress at nine months, we performed additional treatment on the lines that remained.

When evaluating nasolabial folds, it matters not only how deep the lines are but also what facial structure they appear in. It is necessary to distinguish whether the fold results from skin sagging, whether it has formed as a line-like crease, and whether structural features of nearby areas are also contributing.

Once these differences are identified, the treatment direction should be decided based on each individual's condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do nasolabial folds only form when the skin is very sagging?

Not necessarily. In the case described in this article, distinct lines extending toward the mouth appeared even though skin sagging was not severe. Nasolabial folds should be evaluated not only for sagging but also for the structure around the mouth and the chin.

Are nasolabial lines related to facial structure?

Yes, they can be. If the mouth is relatively protruded or the noble area beside the nose is sunken, the height difference with the surrounding area can make the nasolabial folds look more prominent. However, not all nasolabial folds arise from the same cause.

In this case, where were Jubgen and filler used?

Jubgen was applied to the lines in the nasolabial area, and a small amount of filler was used on the noble area and the chin tip. According to the article, the filler was used with consideration for the relatively sunken noble area and the chin tip, which sits farther back. The method and extent of treatment can vary depending on the shape of the lines and facial structure.

What happens to the lines nine months after treatment?

Some lines appeared lighter, but the change was not the same in every area. On the side that had been relatively deeper before treatment, some lines remained, so Jubgen was administered again to that area after the follow-up. This reflects this patient's individual course, and results vary from person to person.

What is the E-line, and how is it related to chin tip filler?

The E-line is a line connecting the tip of the nose and the chin, and it is one of the reference points used to assess how far the lips protrude in a side profile. In this case, after chin tip filler, a difference appeared in the relative position of the lips against the line connecting the nose tip and chin tip. However, the article notes that the E-line is not an absolute standard that applies to everyone.
